Here's a report of K9 activities since May 2018

Kato, the Bluffton police department’s K9, joined the department in May 2018. What’s the effect of the dog on law enforcement in the community?

According to Ryan Burkholder, police chief, “Our main goal in implementing a K9 program is to combat narcotics in and around Bluffton.”

Chief Burkholder added that criminal activity has decreased since the addition of Kato.

A major health benefit in our community

Not everyone’s first-ever summer job was like Henry Gerad’s.

As a 14-year-old in New York City, he worked in the summer as a lab technician in the cancer research lab at Mt. Sinai Hospital.

At that time, Dr. Charlotte Friend, known eventually for her discovery of the Friend Leukemia Virus and Friend erythroleukemia cells, conducted medical research in that lab.

That summer job sparked the young man’s interest in medicine, specifically hematology and oncology.

Michelle Swartley, a junior accounting and economics double major from Cedar Falls, Iowa, shares her research “Escaping the Prison Poverty Trap,” with Dr. Jonathan Andreas and Ermias Assefa, first-year student from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Swartley and more than 40 other students presented during Bluffton’s annual research fair, a poster-session event held during Celebrate the Library Week, Feb. 5-7. Here's the Northwest Conference boys' and girls' basketball league standings as of Feb. 13.

Bluffton High School girls' basketball team crushed Pandora-Gilboa 47-29 in a non-league game on Feb. 12. The win moves BHS to 16-5 overall.

Bluffton's final regular season game is Thursday vs. Delphos Jefferson.

Mercy Health – St. Rita’s Medical Center is pleased to announce the 2019 Mercy Health – St. Rita’s Scholarship Program is now accepting applications. The program for high school seniors graduating in the spring of 2019, allocates $1,500 scholarships to students from our community and region who are interested in pursuing careers as medical professionals.

Students in Allen, Auglaize, Hardin, Hancock, Logan, Mercer, Paulding, Putnam, Shelby and Van Wert counties may apply. Applications can be found at more than 70 high schools and career centers around the 10 county districts.
