During America in Bloom ceremony in Lexington, Kentucky

Steve Stratton, of Stratton Greenhouses, was recognized during the 2018 America in Bloom award ceremony on Sept. 29 in Lexington, Kentucky.

He was among 16 candidates nominated by candidate communities for the John R. Holmes III Community Champion Award.

This award goes to a person who goes above and beyond for their community to make their town more livable. Steve launched the downtown Bluffton petunia flower pots project and several additional flower beautification activities in the community over the years.

It's great weather for a fall harvest. Area farmers are busy all week taking off soybeans and corn. Here are some views of 'beans coming off the field on Columbus Grove Road near Tom Fett Road.

Dr. Jane Wood shines light on Christian higher education

Dr. Wood: "What does it mean to have a university education when students can hold in their hands a smartphone, which can access more information and produce more facts than our counterparts in the Middle Ages could have ever imagined?”

 

During her inaugural address as Bluffton University’s 10th president, Dr. Jane Wood pondered a fact that many people in Yoder Recital Hall likely didn’t realize.

Annalise Nisly, a Bluffton High School junior, is the Bluffton Icon's student artist of the month.

She has taken  Art one, ceramics one and ceramics two.

" I enjoy ceramics because working with clay in my hands is calming and therapeutic to me," she said.  "I especially like this project because I have a lot of creative freedom and I get to be working on one of the most fascinating ecosystems on the earth: the coral reef."

Here plans after high school include college, but specific plans are undecided. Vickie Garmon is the Bluffton HS art teacher.

October topic: “Myths & Misconceptions of Grief”

The 30th annual “Living Through Loss” educational series by Bridge Home Health and Hospice, a division of Blanchard Valley Health System, is currently underway.

Presentations are held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the Marathon Auditorium at Blanchard Valley Hospital, located at 1900 S. Main St., in Findlay. The topic for October is “Myths & Misconceptions of Grief” presented by Jill Gilgenbach, bereavement coordinator at Bridge Home Health and Hospice. The presentation will take place on Monday, Oct. 15.

Junior high boys' win Allen County meet

Congratulations to the Bluffton boys' junior high cross country team. They won the Allen County meet this week.
