Pathway board resignations, pool fees, SR 103 repaving in 2023

By Andy Chappell-Dick

It is possible that as many Bluffton residents pass Monday evenings scrolling through the offerings of streaming services and cable TV, they are missing one of the most compelling and consequential reality shows, now well into its second century of seasons. Every second and fourth Monday at 7 p.m., a revolving cast of characters gathers in front of a live audience to deliberate and make decisions that keep this town operating smoothly. It plays like a courtroom procedural with flashes of drama and comedy. At the end of each episode, audience members get to stand up and leave a review. No ticket is required for entry.

On March 14, Mayor Rich Johnson convened the meeting and ushered the six Council members through a quick approval of the last meeting's minutes and paying of the Village's bills.

Bluffton Marathon at 205 S Main has been a work site in recent days, while crews installed test wells as part of followup on a 2019 chemical release. Filling in this hole was all that remained to be done at the time of the Icon's visit.

When Bluffton Elementary School physical education (PE) teacher Ryan Dunlap challenged students to learn about heart health, raise funds for the American Heart Association and earn PE equipment, he gave them just two weeks.

The financial goal set was $6,000. The amount raised was a whopping $9,629.31.

Perhaps the reward offered was deliciously tempting: to plop a whipped cream pie in Mr. Dunlap’s face. That was the privilege earned by 2nd grader Scarlet Vastano for raising $530.99.

On Saturday, March 12, Southgate Lanes awarded recognition to the top bowlers in the Junior Bowling program which ran from November 2021-March 2022. The bowling alley at 9700 Dixie Hwy. hosted an awards banquet for some 90 youth bowlers and their families, including free pizza and soft drinks.

Owners Derek Dukes and Brandon Falk presented certificates and trophies to the Hot Shot League, Early Bird League, winners of the Ethan Leiber Scholarships (founded by Scott and Angie Leiber), team awards, and Adult/Junior Scotch Doubles awards.

The agenda for the 7:00 p.m. March 14 meeting of the Village of Bluffton council includes the following items:

  • Resolution establishing positions and wages for swimming pool and rates for 2022
  • Resolution (by emergency) accepting a bid and authorizing the Village Administrator to enter into into a contract with Bluffton Stone Company/Bluffton Paving Inc. for the 2022 construction year

The full packet includes the full agenda and:

Dorothy Lee Burkholder, 89, passed away Sunday, March 13, 2022, at 2:15 p.m. at Mennonite Memorial Home.
