Former Bluffton mayor, James Porter King, 87, died May 16, 2021, at the Mennonite Memorial Home in Bluffton. Porter was born April 3, 1934, in Mt. Cory, Ohio, to the late Marco and Mamie (Smith) King. On May 6, 1953, he married Nancy Steinman King who survives.
Porter was a graduate of Cory-Rawson High School. He retired from Triplett Corporation, Bluffton, where he had been the chief financial officer. Porter was an avid stamp collector and was a University of Michigan fan, history and political buff and enjoyed golf.

In this month of May, I urge parents to help keep their sons and daughters focused on finishing the year strong.
Many of our students are involved in extra-curriculars and, at this time of the year, can see the days of summer ahead testing their time-management skills. Setting aside time to study, do homework, complete final projects, and prepare for final exams helps ensure a successful end to the year.

Yes, and here’s proof.
Susie Gilliland of Bluffton shared proof of this event with the Icon earlier this week. Here’s a letter postmarked from Bluffton on May 19, 1938. The letter was send to Susie’s father, Wayne Matter, who at the time was a pre-teenager living in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
Wayne as an adult returned to Bluffton and was active in many aspects of the community including serving as mayor.
