Bluffton Hospital is one location for free screenings

Woman Wise Mammography of Blanchard Valley Health System (BVHS) received a grant from the Northwest Ohio Affiliate of Susan G. Komen, to offer free mammograms and genetic counseling for hereditary breast cancer to qualifying low and middle-income women and men living within Susan G. Komen’s 24-county service area in Northwest Ohio.

Free mammograms will also be available in Bluffton and Ottawa. This one-year grant will take effect on May 1, 2017.

It started with Bill Lape in 1962 and Anna Simcox in 1977

Bluffton University presented its top athletics awards April 18 to standout athletes in basketball and track and field.

Trey Elchert of Jackson Center, Ohio, accepted the A.C. Burcky Award as senior male athlete of the year, while Terrill Webb of Kenton, Ohio, won the Kathryn E. Little Award as outstanding senior female athlete. Elchert, an early childhood education major, is the son of Scott and Leisha Elchert. Webb is an exercise science major. She is the daughter of Doug and Lynn Webb.

Ebenezer Mennonite Church children’s choir, Disciple Singers, will present a spring musical “Kidz Under Construction” on Sunday, April 30, at 10:15 a.m. in the church Crossroads Ministry Center. 

According to the musical directors: "Join the Kids Crew Cast as they deliver breaking news and behind-the-scenes coverage of the New Site Community Church construction project.

"This construction-based musical is filled with biblical principles that demonstrate the importance of building our lives on the strong foundation of Christ’s truth and love." 

...through the tulips. Certainly this is tulip week in Bluffton as the spring flowers in a wide variety of colors are in bloom.

Part of university commencement weekend May 6-7

Bluffton University’s annual May Day ceremony will take place at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, May 6, and will include the traditions of the crowning of a king and queen and the Maypole dance by first-year students.

Filling the roles of king and queen this year are seniors Chad Gundy of Flanagan, Ill., and Rachel Beining of Ottoville, Ohio.

He served four years in the U.S. Coast Guard

Jay D. Bricker, 72, died April 23, 2017, at Willow Ridge surrounded by his family. Jay was born Nov. 6, 1944, in Lima, Ohio to Russell and Ruby Fern (Dorman) Bricker who preceded him in death.  He married Pam (Morton) Bricker who survives.

Jay was a member of the United States Coast Guard for four years. Jay worked for Ex-Cello, Whirlpool Corporation, owned a furniture refinishing business and ended his career at Stratton Auto Sales.

He was a former member of the Lions Club and a member of the American Legion in Bluffton. He was also a former Bluffton council member.
