Shirley J. Kirk, 88, of Ottawa, died at 3:25 p.m. Friday, Jan. 29, 2016, at Blanchard Valley Hospital, Findlay.

She was born Dec. 1, 1927, in Ottumwa, Iowa, to the late Gordon H. and Gertrude (Spencer) Hosmer. Her step-father, Minor "Mac" McDougle is also deceased.

On June 1, 1947 she married William C. "Bill" Kirk at the First Baptist Church in Lima. After 57 years of marriage, he iedy on April 2, 2004.

Mennonite Home Communities of Ohio, Bluffton, is accepting applications for the Barbara Fleming Memorial Nursing Scholarship. 

The scholarship is meant to promote the career of nursing and the scholarship money may be used toward a degree as a licensed practical nurse, a degree as a registered nurse, or a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. 

The scholarship is to be used to pay school related expenses toward any of these degrees.

The scholarship offers a minimum award of $500, and will be paid directly to the vocational school or college where the student is enrolled.

Beaverdam-Richland Fire and EMS was one of 12 area fire and EMS agencies that was a recipient of funds released at the EMS/FD Award Recognition Luncheon on Feb. 2 at St. Rita's Medical Center.

The event recognized the area EMS and fire agencies awarded Community Investment funds from St. Rita’s Health Partners.

The Community Investment funds assist local EMS and fire agencies with the anticipated costs of replacing or upgrading heart-related EMS equipment.

Apollo Career Center launched Career Tech Education Month with its annual all area boards meeting on Feb. 4.

The program highlights included an update by Superintendent Judy Wells on the progress of the seven-phase construction/renovation of Apollo Career Center.

The Bluffton Exempted Village School District is currently accepting applications from students interested in attending the school district through open enrollment for the 2016-2017 school year.
 
Students from any school district in Ohio may apply and enroll in Bluffton Schools tuition free.  Students are admitted on a full-time basis only.
 
Applications are approved annually on a first come, first served basis and approval is subject to grade level enrollment and educational programs.
 

The winter newsletter of the Blanchard River Watershed Partnership is now on the Icon.

The partnership is involved in several programs related to the Blanchard River watershed area.
