Beginning June 6, readers of all ages will travel the globe this summer as part of Bluffton Public Library's Summer Reading Program.
Children will explore places from Oceania to Russia through stories, crafts, music, snacks and other activities during the K-5 Summer Reading Club, "One World, Many Stories."
Children in this program must register at the Children's Desk and are required to read five hours during June and July to complete the program.
In the early 1950s Paul Diller took a series of black and white portraits of Main Street men. This is one of those photos. It is of Lazarus Basinger, also known as "Santa Claus."
This photo was taken in front of Leland Gerber's Neu-Art Photo Studio on South Main Street. Today it is part of the Citizens National Bank parking lot.
Viewers with stories about Lazarus are welcome to send them.
Bluffton's traditional Memorial Day observation is Monday, May 30.
A parade and ceremony is sponsored by the Bluffton American Legion Post 382. The parade forms at 9:15 a.m. in front of the town hall and begins at 9:30 a.m. Parade units include the Bluffton High School marching band, scout and Legion members.
The parade will conclude at Maple Grove Cemetery. A service there is planned at 10 a.m. Don Klinger, a former U.S. Marine Corps Presidential Helicopter pilot, is the speaker.
A discussion of Lisa Tan's book The Kitchen God's Wife will take place in the family room of Maple Crest Senior Living Village on Monday, June 27, at 2:30 p.m.
