More free wellness-related programs are offered this week through Bluffton Family Recreation (BFR). On Jan. 21 (Thursday), Senior Adults are welcome for a morning discussion of Healthy Eating. The discussion will be held from 11 a.m. until about11:45 a.m. and will feature important information about dietary needs of older adults.
Also on Thursday, adults are welcome to a free open session of volleyball. The BFR gym will be available for drop-in volleyball play from 8-10 p.m. On Friday, Jan. 22, the public is invited to use the BFR indoor track from 5:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.
"The indoor track is a popular place to catch up with neighbors and friends while getting exercise," said Carole Enneking, BFR director. Also on Friday, families are invited to visit BFR for an evening of open play. Both the gymnasium and arena, as well as the Wii Entertainment System, will be available for pick up recreation. The usual $5 guest fee is waived for this Keeping Active Fun Night.
Saturday, Jan. 23, will feature a free fitness class from 9-10 a.m. Diane Stratton will lead a session of Zumba, a Latin-based dance aerobic experience. Free walking is on the schedule on Sunday, Jan. 23, from 1-5 p.m.
Two programs are scheduled for Monday, Jan. 25. A free session of Low Impact Aerobics is on tap from 10-11 a.m. in the BFR gymnasium. Low Impact Aerobics is led by Carole Enneking, and features 20 minutes of cardio plus seated weight training exercises plus balance work and stretches. Later in the day (4-5 p.m.), athletes in middle school and high school are welcome for a free session of sport conditioning. Students will participate in a variety of strength and speed activities to introduce the BFR training services.
Tuesday, Jan. 26, will feature a bowling event for area Senior Adults. The Wii bowling system will be used for an individual and group bowling tournament. Bowlers are asked to call and schedule times between 5:30 a.m. and 8 p.m. for their bowling slot. Also on the 26th will be a nutritional program for parents of athletes. Answers to the common questions of "what should an athlete eat before and after practice," as well as nutritious snacks will be addressed. This and other nutritional programs will be led by Nicole Frey, Bluffton University intern.
A demonstration of exercises to improve balance will be offered on Wednesday, Jan. 27, at 10 a.m. Led by BFR's wellness coordinator, Jessica Ladd, the 45-minute demo will be include actual exercises. Participants should come in comfortable clothes. Also on that day will be a free session of Adult Soccer from 7-9 p.m.
