Bluffton University Pops Concert on tap April 13
Bluffton University's annual Pops Concert, at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 13, in Founders Hall, will offer a mix of music ranging from Irving Berlin to Billy Joel and Burt Bacharach. The concert is free and open to the public; donations will be accepted for program costs, with any excess funds going toward music scholarships.
The evening will begin with jazz-including Berlin's "Alexander's Ragtime Band"-from the university's Jazz Ensemble, directed by Dr. Adam Schattschneider, professor of music.
Accent!, Bluffton's all-male chorus, will present "The Longest Time" and "And So It Goes," both by Joel, along with "Barbara Ann," made famous by the Beach Boys. Dr. Mark Suderman, professor of music, conducts Accent!
Pianist Anya Stembler-Smith is the accompanist both for Accent! and Bel Canto, the university's all-female choir, which will perform Journey's "Faithfully"; "Son of a Preacher Man"; and the Bacharach/Hal David collaboration, "I Say a Little Prayer." Dr. Jon Peterson, assistant professor of music, is Bel Canto's conductor.
The Bluffton Concert Band's program includes "Rhapsody for Alto Saxophone" by Dr. Jeffrey Boehm, professor of music and the band's conductor. Schattschneider will be the guest soloist on the piece.
Dennis Crites, an adjunct faculty member, will direct the Percussion Ensemble on an arrangement of Chick Corea's "Children's Song No. 2 and 14."
