Presbyterians hold Earth Day "blessing of animals" service
Rev. Dr. Matthew Zuehlke of the Bluffton Presbyterian Church will conduct a Blessing of the Animals on the Presbyterian church lawn at 2 p.m., Sunday, April 22, in celebration of Earth Day. All creatures great and small are welcome.
One of the animals being blessed is Jakarri Jack, a Huacaya alpaca, who lives at the farm and vet practice of Dr. Cheryl DeWitt, and her husband Eric, near Bluffton. Jack is a blue ribbon champion and has a very gentle personality. He grazes on grass and his diet is supplemented with feed containing vitamins and minerals. The alpaca fiber is among the finest and warmest in the world.
Also being blessed are Trader and Riley, Tennessee Walking horses belonging to Betsey and Bob Angus. Asked if they want a treat, they will shake their heads "yes." Watermelon rinds are their favorite summer treat.
Many smaller animals, including dogs, cats and ferrets are planning to attend and all members of the community are invited to bring their pets.
According to Rev. Zuehlke, "Scripture tells us again and again that God loves all of Creation, including animals. We are instructed to live out that care in our walks of faith and daily lives."
He added: The Blessing of the Animals service will help recognize the special gifts of animals in our lives and in Creation. According to Proverbs 12:10, "The righteous care for the needs of their animals, but the kindest acts of the wicked are cruel."
