Marion E. "Sam" Shields, 87, of Bluffton, Ohio, formerly of Ida, Mich., died December 26, 2012.

Friends may call at the Capaul Funeral Home, Ida, Wednesday, January 2, 2013, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., with a Fireman's Last Call Service that evening.

He will lie in state at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, Ida, Mich., Thursday, January 3, 2013, from 10 a.m. until services at 11 a.m.. Pastor Ted Kerr will officiate.

Burial will be in Pleasant View Cemetery, Petersburg, Mich.. Graveside services will be under the auspices of the Lynn C. Weeman American Legion Post 514.

Born September 28, 1925, in Monroe, Mich., Sam was the son of Earl H. and Helma F. (Amann) Shields. A 1943 Ida High School graduate, he served with the US Navy from May 1943 to June 1947.

He married Hazel Mae Brossia September 7, 1946 in East Ida Immanuel Lutheran Church. She died January 9, 1996.

He then married Janice Bucher, May 3, 1997, in Bluffton, Ohio.

Sam was employed by Consolidated Paper Co. until he opened the Shields Service Station in Ida, which he operated from 1960 to 1967. He then became an agent for the Farm Bureau Insurance Group until his retirement.

Sam was a member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, a former Chief of the Ida Volunteer Fire Department, Past President of the Monroe County Life Underwriters, and loved all sports.

He also volunteered at the Mennonite Home, Richland Manor, and the soup kitchen, in Lima. Sam was a Life member of the Lynn C. Weeman American Legion Post 514, Ida.

Surviving are: his wife, Janice; daughters, Terry (Gary) Adams, Debbie (Ron) Haines, Wendy (Terry) Missler; grandchildren, Kristi (Jay) Johnson, Kurt (Kendahl) Adams, Kellie (Jason) Reeder, Bryan Bagnall, Brok Bagnall, Brittany (Bobby) Millard, Melissa (Adam) Steenrod, Travis (Amanda) Missler; and great-grandchildren, Amelia and Garrett Johnson, Kailyn Reeder, Lily and Macy Millard, Savana Missler, Ava, Cole, Emerson, Rayner, and Finlay Steenrod.

Sam was preceded in death by his first wife, Hazel Mae, a brother, William Shields, and a sister, Elaine (Soleau) LaVigne.
