BFR Sports & Fitness Challenges Families with 5-2-1-Almost None Program
Beginning Friday, Jan. 25, area families will be encouraged to add fruits and vegetables to the daily menu, limit screen time and add physical activity as part of the 5-2-1-Almost None Family Challenge sponsored by BFR.
This challenge is part of the annual Keeping Active Wellness campaign that begins Jan. 21. The 5-2-1-Almost None program has been offered through schools and communities by the "Let's Go" organization.
Families will register during the week of Jan.21 with a Kick-off Event planned for Friday, Jan. 25 (6-8 p.m.) at BFR, 215 Snider Road. Families will track their daily intake of fruit and vegetable servings (striving for a minimum of 5), screen time (limiting to 2 hours of recreational time), activity (striving for a minimum of 1hour each day), as well as limit the amount of sugary beverages that are consumed.
As part of the Keeping Active event calendar, family activities are included each week. In addition, graduate interns from Bluffton University will be providing weekly demonstration sessions on nutritional topics.
Sessions will focus on family meal planning, how to "rethink your drink", healthy snacks, and reading food labels. An interactive session for middle and high school students will teach about nutrition to increase sport performance.
Bluffton University's involvement is a result of a grant received by Jennifer Little, RD, LD, Dietetics Internship Experience Coordinator. Door prizes will be available at the kick-off event. Families will check in weekly to record their accomplishments.
The 5-2-1-Almost None challenge will end March 1 with each family meeting the goals receiving prizes.
