Tagged trout number 1 - "Big Glove" now lurks in the Buckeye
The first Sunday in May – for the past six decades in Bluffton that means the Bluffton Community Sportsmen’s Club trout derby at the Buckeye quarry.
This year’s derby following a time-honored tradition of naming tagged trout number one after a Bluffton icon – and this year’s fish “Big Glove” honors the Bluffton Peerless Ohio Glove Factory. If caught during derby hours, it’s worth – well, the pot keeps growing – lots.
In addition to tag number one there are 250 tagged trout with prizes. Those trout were tagged and released in the Buckeye on Tuesday.
Fishing in the Buckeye is now closed until the derby opens at 2 p.m. on Sunday. Several other prizes are part of the derby. A raffle, with tickets sold at the derby, include the following prizes:
1 - Quarter Beef from Montgomery Farms
2 - $200 cash
3 - $100 cash
4 - $75 cash
5 - $50 cash
6 - $25 cash
7 - Free massage from Robin Massage Therapy ($30 Value)
Raffle tickets are $1 each or eight for $5.
Persons fishing in the derby must have a club membership. The cost is $30 for persons 14 and older, and $10 for youth 13 and under.
Memberships are sold at Family True Value Hardware, Riley Creek Mercantile, Kibbee’s Carryout and in Pandora at Ted’s Market. Memberships are also on sale on derby day at the Buckeye.
Also on Sunday is a chicken barbecue with serving starting at 11 a.m. Pick up is at the Sportmen’s depot on Spring Street. Tickets are $7 each.
