In the 15-plus years since completing cosmetology school, Mandi Kinn has dreamed of opening a multi-service salon in Bluffton. After months of hard work renovating a turn-of-the-century Main Street house into a modern salon, Kinn will open Spectrum Salon on Tuesday, June 10, at 422 N. Main St., Bluffton. She plans a grand opening from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, June 21.

As suggested by the name and reflected by the multicolored logo, Spectrum Salon will offer not just hairstyling and coloring, but also manicures, body sugaring (a natural alternative to waxing), and eventually, massage therapy.

The rooms on the first floor of the house allow for separate stations for various services. The main room houses four style stations, with a waiting area next to the fireplace, and a children's play area filled with toys and books in an adjacent alcove. The front door opens into the reception area, and the hallway leads to a shampoo room featuring European-style sinks, and another room with a color bar.

"Instead of going back into the dispensary, we'll do the mixing in front of the customer," said Kinn, adding that the color bar allows the stylist to better converse with the customer as they're mixing. A massage/manicure room offers privacy, and a small laundry allows the staff easy access.

According to Kinn, the attached garage will eventually be renovated and integrated into the salon, as a more private massage area. The second floor has been converted into an office and break room for staff.

Converting and renovating the house involved not just new plumbing, but new flooring, light fixtures, paint, vanities and counter tops, as well as removing a closet and part of a wall. Much of the work was done by Kinn, her husband, Jon, his brother, Mike, and his parents, Larry and Barb Kinn. Family members, she says, "got dragged into it."

All of their work has resulted in fulfilling Kinn's original layout vision with a "modern, yet vintage flair." Various neutral shades of gray are set off by touches of bright color -- one turquoise wall, and some vintage-look metal pieces. They also incorporated the fireplace (electric) into the waiting area.

When Spectrum Salon opens, Kinn will realize a longtime dream. After completing two years at Bluffton College, she admits she had not yet discovered her "niche." While in college, she had often gone home to Celina to cut and style hair for her two sisters. While doing the hair for her sister's wedding, her aunt said "Why are you not doing this?"

That comment spurred Kinn to enroll at Ohio State Cosmetology in Lima. After 10 years as a stylist, she realized she didn't want to do just hair so began training as an educator, and today is a design team member/educator for Joico, ISO, and Minardi. She does both in-salon training and hands-on training at hair show events.

Kinn is owner/stylist of the salon. Cassie Weyer will join her as a stylist, and Kathy Housh (her aunt-in-law) will be the receptionist. Kinn plans to add more stylists, as well as a nail tech and massage therapist.

The salon will be open Monday through Saturday, and while appointments are encouraged, walk-ins will be accepted.
