Maynard Badertscher built many homes in Bluffton; served on Bluffton council 10 years
Maynard R. Badertscher, 90, died June 10, 2014, at 1:20 a.m., Hilty Memorial Home, Pandora. He was born Jan, 3, 1924 in Allen County, Ohio, to Albert O. and Sarah Hochstettler Badertscher who preceded him in death. On May 2, 1953, he married Joyce Kline Badertscher who survives.
Mr. Badertscher retired after building many houses as owner/operator of Maynard Badertscher & Assoc. where he built many homes in Bluffton and the surrounding areas.
He was a lifetime member of St. John's United Church of Christ, Bluffton, where he had served on the building committee, as an elder and deacon. He was a councilman for the Village of Bluffton for 10 years. He served on the Mennonite Memorial Home Board for 21 years and was a member of the Swiss Historical Society.
He was a member of the DAV and American Legion Post #382, Bluffton. In 1944 he was drafted into the military and completed his basic training at Camp Blanding near Stark, Fla. He served at Aachaen, Germany, in the U.S. Army where he was wounded by shrapnel. He was sent to a hospital in England, then one in Glasglow, Scotland. In 1945 he returned to the United States aboard the Queen Mary, for his final hospital stay at Billings General Hospital in Indianapolis. He was awarded the Purple Heart upon his discharge.
Survivors include two daughters, Kathi Badertscher of Bluffton, Valli Burris of Marysville; a son, Rex (Betty) Badertscher of Bluffton; five grandchildren Rachel (Eric) Schearer, Holly (Sean) Goodwin, Erin (Mat) Otto, Christen (Brandon) Shoemaker, Alli (Caleb) Bingham; nine great grandchildren Abby, Morgan & Dakota Schearer, Olivia Goodwin, Julianne and Chase Otto, Baylee and Kylee Shoemaker and Noah Bingham.
Maynard was preceded in death by two brothers J. Lyle Badertscher and Gene Badertscher and two sisters, Vera Mitchell and Erma Augsburger.
Services will be held at 2 p.m., Friday June 13, Chiles-Laman Funeral & Cremation Services, Bluffton. Rev. Rick Hart officiating. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Bluffton where military rites will be held. Visitation will be Thursday from 2 p.m. - 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
