Bluffton volleyball takes down Heidelberg and Albion

BLUFFTON, Ohio - The Sommer Center Spiketacular returned to campus again this year, bringing in four new teams in addition to Bluffton: Albion, Denison, Geneva, Heidelberg. In an incredible opening match against Heidelberg, Bluffton defeated the Student Princes for the first time since 2000. The five-set match had 40 tie scores and 18 lead changes before the Beavers came out on top of the Berg, 23-25, 25-20, 25-22, 21-25, and 15-10.
At the net, sophomore MacKenzie McFarlin (Ashland) dominated the Heidelberg defense, landing 23 kills with a hitting percentage of .300 and Ashley Litwiller (Hopedale, Ill./Olympia) added four blocks. Junior Sara Roth (Findlay/Van Buren) dished out 57 assists and led the defense with 26 digs. Freshman libero Sydney Mohler (Lima/Central Christian) was right behind her with 23 digs and led the team from the service line with six beautiful aces.
After a 40-minute break, Bluffton faced their second Spiketacular opponent, Albion College from the MIAA. The Beavers quickly dispatched the Britons in straight sets with scores of 25-10, 25-12, 25-16. Juniors Kendra Parmenter (Grove City) and Jenny Brown (St. Marys/Memorial) and sophomore Lauren Weisgarber (Bolivar/Tuscarawas Valley) led Bluffton from the front lines with 16 (.542 hitting), 11 (.625 hitting), and 10 (.444 hitting) kills, respectively. Roth dished out 46 assists and Mohler added another 17 digs from the back row.
The Beavers will play again tomorrow at 10 a.m and 2 p.m. against Denison and Geneva. Come out and cheer on the Beavers as they try to cap off a 4-0 weekend at the Sommer Center Spiketacular!
