Bluffton American Legion recognizes six BHS students as Americanism winners
Six Bluffton High School students are winners in the 2014 Bluffton American Legion Post 382 Americanism competition.
Students winners are:
• Collin Phillips, sophomore,
• Braden Skilliter, senior,
• Kathryn Basinger, senior ( a three-year winner of this competition),
• Hannah Hartzler, sophomore, (absent when photo taken)
• Elizabeth Nisly, sophomore, (absent when photo taken)
• Jared Metzger, junior, (absent when photo taken)
From the field of 84 district winners, the state judging committee selects 18 winners in the following categories: 6 state winners, 3 men and 3 women from each grade, 10, 11 and 12 for a total of 18 winners.
The State Award from the Ohio American Legion for the 18 State winners is a five day, all expenses paid trip to Gettysburg, Pa., and Washington, D.C., under the direction of the Department Americanism Director, accompanied by representatives of the Ohio American Legion and Ohio American Legion Auxiliary.
A highlight of the trip is a Wreath Laying at the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery
An objective of the Ohio American Legion through the Americanism and Government test program is that if by taking the test a young person is inspired to learn more about government, the United States, and to appreciate the freedoms enjoyed by the nation's citizens.
