Christian Peacemaker Team visits university
As part of Bluffton University's Pathways scholars-in-residence program, three members of Christian Peacemaker Teams (CPT) will be on campus Nov. 10-12. The three members include Sylvia Morrison, Sandra Milena Rincon and Tarek Abuata. During their visit, they will be visiting students and classes, as well as speaking during forum on Tuesday, Nov. 10, at 11 a.m.
Sylvia Morrison is originally from Jamaica, but she immigrated to Canada. She taught at George Brown College in Toronto, with a focus on violence against women. She served as a counselor for victims of violence and sexual assault. Morrison has also done work for rape crisis centers and family shelters. She began working as CPT's undoing racism coordinator in 2007.
Sandra Milena Rincon, from Columbia, started training with CPT in 2003. She studied psychology at the National University of Columbia before her work took her to the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda, serving on CPT's steering committee. After three years, she moved to a new position as support coordinator in Columbia .
Tarek Abuata was raised in Palestine before moving with his family to the United States at age 12. In 2002, Abuata earned his law degree from the University of Texas Law School and then spent a year back in Palestine working with the Negotiations Support Unit. He has more recently served with the Palestinian nonviolence movement. Through this work, he has spent time as director of Love Thy Neighbor, which trains Palestinian children in nonviolence. He has been a part of CPT since 2007.
