Robert Green flew in over 50 mission in WWII; received Distinguished Flying Cross Air Medal and 10 Oak Leaf Clusters
Robert H. Green, 93, of Rockport died at 10 p.m., March 3, 2015, at Mennonite Memorial Home, Bluffton. Robert was born April 8, 1921, in Toledo to Leonard and Hazel Brown Green. On Dec. 24, 1946, he married Ruth Freet who preceded him in death on Oct. 1, 2012.
Robert retired after 41 years from Westinghouse, Lima, where he was a supervisor. He was a member of the Rockport United Methodist Church and American Legion Post 96, Lima. He was a graduate of Beaverdam High School.
He served in the Army Air Corps during WWII In Africa and Italy. He was in the 301st Bomber Group, 357 Bomber Squadron, 15th Army Air Corps. Robert was a ball turret gunner on the B-17 bombers. He flew over 50 missions and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross Air Medal and 10 Oak Leaf Clusters.
Robert is survived by a son, Ronald (Linda) Green of Columbus Grove, a granddaughter, Laura (Bernie) Bellmann of Bluffton, a great grandson, Henry Bellmann, and a brother-in-law, Russell Hoffman of Kalida. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Donald Gene and Kenneth Green and a sister Wanda Hoffman.
Funeral services will begin 11 a.m. Saturday at Chiles-Laman Funeral and Cremation Services, Bluffton. Rev. Michael Downey will officiate. Burial will be in Rockport Cemetery with military rites.
Friends may call from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Rockport United Methodist Church or Beaverdam-Richland Fire and Rescue. Online condolences may be expressed at www.chiles-lamanfh.com.
