Robert Bassitt was a former LaFayette police chief
Robert E. "Bob" Bassitt Sr., 88, died April 7, 2015, at 8:21 p.m., Lima Memorial Health System.
He was born Oct. 27, 1926 in Beaverdam, to Carl and Mildred (James) Bassitt who preceded him in death.
He married Laura Fay Johnson on Sept. 1, 1947, at the Labor Day Rodeo on horseback in Ada, Ohio.
He was a member of the Congregational Christian Church in Lafayette. He retired from Ford Motor Company, and had worked at Davidson Enamel and Lima Packing Company. He served in World War II in the South Pacific in the Military Police. He was Chief of Police in Lafayette, and a Boy Scout Master, Troop 11, and served as a Volunteer Fireman. He also was Grange Master at Bath Grange and a member of the V.F.W. and the Fraternal Order of Eagles. He was an Honorary Life Member U.S.A.F Air Defense Team.
Survivors include: two children, Robert E. (Janet) Bassitt, Jr. of Wapakoneta, daughter, Linda K (Daniel) Fleming of Bluffton, six grandchildren, Jeremy Fleming of Bluffton, Angela (Eric) Lewis of New Albany, Jason (Cynthia) Fleming of Bluffton; Michael (Cristina) Bassitt of Washington state, David (Sheila) Bassitt of Idaho, and Brian (Michelle) Bassitt of Columbus.
Ten great grandchildren, Mariah (Greg) Short, Sidney and Gabby Lewis, Kyle, Liliana, and Jacob Fleming, Jacob and Philip Bassitt, Sadie and Makenna Bassitt. Two great great grandchildren, Auden and Leah. Two sisters, Dorothy (Clarence) Kersker of Lima, and Arleen Handfield.
Preceded in death by: brother, James "Jim" Bassitt, sister, Josephine Ann.
Services will be held Saturday, April 11, at 10 a.m. at Chiles-Laman Funeral & Cremation Services - Eastside Chapel. Pastor Jerry Hall to officiate the service. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery following the service.
Friends may call Friday, April 10, 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at Chiles-Laman Funeral & Cremation Services - Eastside Chapel.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Allen County Humane Society.
