Alec Yoder, grandson of Alan and Diann, launches gymnastic career at OSU

Alec Yoder, grandson of Alan and Diann Yoder, Bluffton, launched his gymnastics career at Ohio State University on Dec. 21 leading the Grey team to a win at the Scarlet and Gray Intrasquad. The OSU freshman won the all-around title.

Alec is the son Mike and Rebecca Yoder of Indianapolis. Mike is a Bluffton HS grad. Details follow:

The Gray team defeated the Scarlet team, 269.300-265.300, earning its fourth win in the exhibition contest in the last five seasons. The Top-3 scores per team on each apparatus counted toward the final results.

“I’m really pleased with our overall performance,” head coach Rustam Sharipov said after the meet. “We had an 80 percent hit percentage, which was our highest at this point in the season in quite some time. I saw a lot of encouraging signs as we head into the regular season.”

Yoder won the all-around title with a score of 91.200, posting the highest overall score on three of six events (pommel horse, floor exercise and vault).

Other event winners were junior Andrew Rickly (high bar, parallel bars), redshirt sophomore Sean Melton (rings) and Burke, who tied Yoder for first place on vault.

The Buckeyes have three weeks off before returning to the gym for the Alumni Exhibition at Steelwood on Saturday, Jan. 9. The regular season begins Jan. 17 at the Windy City Invitational in Chicago.
