PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - A three-run eighth and an inning-ending double play propelled Bluffton University to a 5-4 victory over Moravian College on Wednesday, March 9, 2016. The Beavers took advantage of three straight walks in the eighth in improving to 2-3 on the season. Moravian dropped to 4-4 following the loss.
The Greyhounds were the first to get on the board, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first after consecutive RBI singles. Bluffton broke the ice in the top of the second after a REID MAUS (Hamilton/Badin) RBI single picked up CLAYTON SIDERS (Delaware/Worthington Christian) from third.
Moravian had runners on second and third in the bottom half, but JAYLEN VON SOSSAN (Ottawa/Ottawa-Glandorf) was able to get out of the jam after notching his first strikeout of the day to keep the score at 2-1.
The Beavers tied it up in the top of the fourth when BLAKE FOX (Berne, Ind./South Adams) scored on an RBI groundout from JASON COLLIVER (Beavercreek). The score remained deadlocked until the seventh inning when Moravian went up 4-2 after a two-run double.
Bluffton responded with a three-run eighth to take a 5-4 lead. With the bases juiced thanks to three consecutive walks, TOMMY NOBILE (Reynoldsburg) scored off a Moravian throwing error. The Beavers would get their second run of the inning courtesy of an RBI single by Colliver. Rounding out the scoring spree, patience at the plate by AUSTIN PROSSER (Galion) forced a walk with the bases loaded, bringing home TANNER HAMILTON (Centerville) to give Bluffton its first lead of the ballgame.
There was still plenty of fight in the Greyhounds as they battled to the end. With bases loaded, the Beavers took advantage of a game-ending double play for their second win of the season.
Jaylen Von Sossan picked up his first win of the season after going seven strong innings. He allowed four runs on nine hits with two strikeouts and three walks. Travis Clark worked the final two frames for his first save. Clark fanned two and allowed just one hit while working around two Bluffton errors in the ninth.
Luke Hickey (Toledo/Whitmer), Clayton Siders and Reid Maus all rapped two hits in the victory. Jason Colliver drove in two runs and Blake Fox crossed the dish twice.
Bluffton will be back in action on Thursday, March 10 when the Beavers take on the Dominican University Stars at 12 p.m. Follow the Live Stats at http://portal.stretchinternet.com/dustars/.
