The Icon caught up with Mitchell Ault, freshman at Walsh University, and quarterback on its football team. Mitchell holds Bluffton High School records with most career passing yards (5,645), most career completions (380/674), and most career TD passes (60).
Icon: What is Walsh's football record?
Mitchell: Walsh Cavaliers have a record of 1-8 in the GLIAC. Next year we are joining the GMAC League. I started at quarterback in the fourth quarter in the second game of the season at Hillsdale, Michigan. I've started at quarterback since the next game at Saginaw Valley.
Icon: Who is on the Walsh schedule?
Mitchell: This year’s schedule included Michigan Tech, Hillsdale, Saginaw Valley, Grand Valley State, Northern Michigan, Tiffin, Wayne State, Malone, Ohio Dominican, Ashland and Northwood.
Icon: Who is your coach?
Mitchell: Our head coach is Ted Karras, in his third year at Walsh. Prior to Walsh, he was at Marian University and won the NAIA National Championship in 2012. Our quarterback coach/offensive coordinator is Adam Wiese, who played quarterback for Karras at Marian.
Icon: When did the season begin?
Mitchell: I moved in at Walsh on Aug. 10. That was two-and-a-half weeks before other students arrived on campus.
Icon: How many hours of practice each day?
Mitchell: Football practice is two-and-a-half hours a day, plus watching films for one-and-a-half-hours.
Icon: What was your longest bus trip this season?
Mitchell: It was a trip to Michigan Tech, in Houghton, Michigan. Fourteen hours. The team left campus on Thursday for the Saturday game.
Icon: Why did you choose Walsh?
Mitchell: The football staff began talking with me at start of my junior year at BHS. This early and continued interest made a lasting impression. Also, as a business management major, I became interested in Walsh University because it is nationally ranked with its DeVille School of Business.
Icon: When you think back on your high school and earlier football career, who are some of the coaches who helped you?
Mitchell: I really appreciated the help and support from coaches like Jeff Swank, Brad Jones, Dave Siefker, Brad Longberry and Ben Mauk.
Icon: Good luck in your future seasons at Walsh.
