Study guide presentation on human sexuality from a biblical perspective
The study guide, "Human Sexuality in Biblical Perspective" will be presented during a 4 p.m. event on March 30 in Bluffton University’s Musselman Library Reading Room.
Lois Johns Kaufmann, who was conference minister of Mennonite Church USA’s Central District Conference at the time the guide was produced, wrote the foreword and coordinated the work that led to publication.
“We did not design this document as a policy statement to be affirmed or rejected but rather as a discussion tool to be tested and questioned,” said Johns Kaufmann. “We do, however, believe that this study guide offers a fresh biblical perspective that deserves prayerful consideration and conversation as we welcome the call of God’s Spirit to test and discern patterns of faithfulness in our time and place.”
Emphasizing the radical inclusion and covenant integrity displayed in the life and teachings of Jesus Christ, the study guide takes readers on a journey through biblical settings and statements about sexuality. For those who seek biblical footing amid changing understandings of sexuality and intimacy, the guide provides resources for conversation and discernment.
The study guide, described as a collaborative effort, was edited by Carrie and Gerald Mast. Carrie Mast assists with the administration of graduate programs in business at Bluffton University and serves on the board of directors of Central District Conference. Gerald Mast teaches communication at Bluffton University and is the author of numerous books and articles including “Go to Church, Change the World: Christian Community as Calling.” They are members of First Mennonite Church in Bluffton.
Alex Sider, associate professor of religion at Bluffton, participated in the task group that produced the original theological statement upon which this study guide is based.
Other collaborators will also be at the study guide presentation in the library.
