Pops concert features university musical ensembles
Various Bluffton University musical ensembles will come together Friday, April 7, to present the annual Pops Concert at 7:30 p.m. in Founders Hall. The event is free and open to the public.
The Bluffton University Concert Band will perform various selections including a wind band transcription of “Buckaroo Holiday,” music from Aaron Copeland’s ballet “Rodeo.” The band will be led by Dr. Roy Couch and senior music education major Aaron Johnson of Goshen, Ind.
The Camerata Singers will perform “Gamelan” by Canadian composer R. Murray Schafer. It is a composition based on the gamelan music of Bali and Java using an unusual pentatonic scale. The piece will be conducted by Dr. Mark Suderman.
The University Chorale will perform five pieces. The women of the group will perform “I Bought Me a Cat” arranged by Aaron Copland and “Bring Me Little Water, Silvy” arranged by Moira Smiley. The first piece will be conducted by senior music education major Kimberly Meyer of Defiance, Ohio. The second piece will be conducted by senior music education major Mary Bender of Harrisonburg, Va.
The men of the Chorale will perform “Duke of Earl” arranged by Ed Lojeski, which will be conducted by senior music education major Samuel Black of Deshler, Ohio, as well as “Goodnight, Sweetheart, Goodnight” arranged by Roger Emerson and conducted by Aaron Johnson.
Suderman, director of choral activities, will conduct a combined University Chorale piece titled “Things That Never Die,” arranged by Lee Dengler.
Ana Yoder Coulter will accompany both the Camerata Singers and the University Chorale.
The Bluffton University Jazz Combo will perform three selections including the soulful Cannonball Adderley classic “Walk Tall.” The ensemble will feature solos by Aaron Johnson, Eddie Martin and Daniel Piero. The Jazz Combo is directed by Dr. Andrew Liebermann.
