When Mary Maas was working toward her degree in interior design at Bowling Green State University, she was surprised to discover that no businesses in the region specialized in helping seniors make their homes safer and more comfortable.

With experience as a registered nurse, Maas knows exactly how needs and abilities change with age.

She started her own business, M2 Interiors & Design, using the "Aging-in-Place" concept to help clients improve daily living conditions and reduce potential hazards.

Meeting with clients in their homes, Maas talks to them about current problems as well as potential needs in the future. She observes the comfort, accessibility, and safety issues that are present.

With this knowledge, she creates a plan to update the client's home, which can range from easy improvements with off-the-shelf products to new construction. Maas's goal is to make staying in your own home a viable, cost-effective alternative to moving to assisted living or a nursing home.

Another personalized service that Maas provides is residential downsizing, which includes selecting what to take with you and creating room layouts in a smaller residence.

Maas can also address ecological consideration, including sustainability, recycling, and conservation. Her goal is to create a cleaner, quieter, and safer residential environment.

Maas is addressing growing needs, with the Baby Boom generation swelling the ranks of retirees.

Her concept won first place in the Bluffton Center for Entrepreneurs BIG Idea contest, which awarded her a $1,000 prize.

"I am excited that my "Aging in Place' concept won the Big Idea contest and pleased with the opportunity to serve the local community," she said.
