Volleyball splits on Friday the 13th

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Bluffton University traveled to Kentucky for a Friday the 13th tri-match. Bluffton fell to HCAC-rival Transylvania in the first match of the night. The Beavers dropped a four-set decision (25-20, 25-17, 12-25, 26-24). They rallied back to win against Hendrix in a non-conference contest. Bluffton swept Hendrix in three tight sets (25-22, 27-25, 25-23). The Beavers are now 13-10 overall and 3-2 in the Heartland Conference.
Transylvania had its way with Bluffton the first two sets, but Bluffton wasn’t going to go down without a fight. The Beavers routed the home team in set three (25-12) with a tremendous defensive effort. Bluffton and the Pioneers needed extra time in the fourth before Transy clinched it 26-24.
Five Beavers collected double-digit digs in the four-set match. Senior Sydney Mohler (Lima/Central Catholic) led the way with 29 digs. Junior Bethany Martini (Pickerington/North) earned 16 digs while setter Erin Weisgarber (Bolivar/Tuscarawas Valley) added 12 pickups. Juniors Courtney Zimpfer (Jackson Center) and Abby Rohrbach (New Knoxville) tallied 10 digs apiece.
Weisgarber tallied 34 assists while also having six kills. Martini paced the Bluffton offense with 10 kills. Jessie Gibson (Warsaw/River View) and Sarah Heydinger (Tiro/Buckeye Central) rammed home nine kills apiece.
The Beavers were not about to leave Kentucky without a victory as they took down Hendrix in three tough sets. Weisgarber had another outstanding match with 26 assists, 11 digs and six kills. Mohler took over in the back row and tallied 22 digs for the victors. Martini helped the cause with nine kills, while Heydinger added eight. Bower also chipped in seven spikes against Hendrix.
Bluffton will enjoy an extended fall break before welcoming Anderson University to the Sommer Center on Wednesday, Oct. 18. THe first serve is slated for 7 p.m. Come out and support your Beavers!
