Healthy eating doesn’t have to be boring…
By Christine Schroeder, MOT, OTR/L
So you’ve decided to start eating healthy this year, but have no idea where to start.
Honestly speaking, you may even be a little discouraged at the thought. Fruits and vegetables….ugh! Rest assured healthy eating does not have to be overwhelming or boring.
The first thing to remember is to start small. “Rome wasn’t built in a day.” Lasting lifestyle changes are most effective when done in small steps. For example, try incorporating or replacing one snack each day with a fruit or vegetable.
Radical changes to our diets usually end in disaster and have us returning to our ‘old ways’. Habits are slowly changed over time. So, instead of putting pressure on ourselves to revamp our entire diets, all at once, try changing or focusing on one meal a week.
But, just as important as starting small is being honest. Remember to keep the end goal in mind and to continue to challenge yourself with healthier eating. Be creative. Make it fun…yes, healthy eating can be fun! ;-)
The next time you go grocery shopping, try buying something new and nutritious. We are creatures of habit and tend to do mindless shopping. Give yourself a few extra minutes the next time you are at the grocery store to explore some new items in the fruit and vegetable aisle.
