Your rural Bluffton historical discovery
Several photos of the homestead are featured at the bottom of this story.
Thomas Wolfe said, “You can’t go home again.” But in rural Bluffton, you can return to the 1840s.
On Saturdays, between now and the end of August, the Swiss Historical Society opens to the public its restored Schumacher homestead at 8350 Bixel Road.
The homestead is open from 1 to 5 p.m. and a docent will show you some of the features of the home and grounds.
Visitors will see a kitchen, living area, bedrooms, basement, summer kitchen and outdoors.
The homestead’s garden, for example, includes culinary and medicinal herbs. The homestead also has an outdoor oven.
Admission is $5 per person.
