At 7 p.m. on April 29, a cast of 29 students in grades 1-8 will take the stage with two professional actors in Prairie Fire Children's Theatre's original musical production of "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" at Trinity Lutheran School, 105 Allen Street, Jenera.

Two professional actors, Sam and Emma, will take the roles of The Huntsman and The Evil Queen.

The show, which Prairie Fire first premiered in 1987, features an original script by their resident playwright and composer Daniel Nordquist. It is based on "Little Snow White," the classic fairy tale gathered from a peasant storyteller by the brothers Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, published in 1812.

The script returns some of the elements of the original story that were lost in the genius of Walt Disney's imagination in 1937. For example, Snow White was not saved at the end by a kiss from the Prince, but because the Dwarfs stumbled on a tree root while carrying her coffin across the mountains. As the coffin hit the ground, it jarred Snow White and the culprit piece of poisoned apple lodged in her throat popped out, saving her life.

Playwright Nordquist has changed and combined the Grimm and Disney endings to provide an interesting twist: Snow White is saved by the Prince, but not a kiss.

Nordquist composed original music for the show. Production numbers include, "I'm the Queen," a jazzy doo-wop number featuring the Evil Queen and her Ravens; "Rugged Days, Rugged Nights," the Prince's theme; "The Queen at Her Window," with the Townspeople and the Huntsman; and "Doobadoobadoobadoo," the Dwarf's song. Dance numbers include "The Forest Creature Boogie."

Snow White is a culmination of a week-long residency by Prairie Fire Children's Theatre, based in Barrett, Minnesota, which tours year-round, providing a week-long professional theatrical experience and providing everything needed to do the show.
