Have you been dying for a peek into the new business at 115 N. Main? Following two years of renovation and research, Mike and Mary Burris have unveiled the 1861 Wine Lounge. A grand opening weekend and Bluffton Area Chamber of Commerce ribbon cutting ceremony in August introduced customers and well wishers to the made-from-scratch business. SLIDE SHOW

When asked about their plans and motivations, the pair are suddenly emotional. The endeavor is a way to give back to Bluffton, they explain and to “create another reason to come to Bluffton.” Those intentions are also communicated by a “Giving Wall” next to the area where patrons place orders.

Mary describes the endeavor as “a fun retirement job” and Mike characterizes the concept as a “modern day speakeasy.” Their eyes sparkle as they talk about their collaboration. Mary’s prior career was in healthcare, while Mike was a plant manager.

When you walk by the business on Main St., “1861 Wine Lounge” is prominently displayed on the large windows, but one-way shades keep the interiors a mystery. From the inside, there are two pub tables with views of downtown Bluffton, couches upholstered in green velvet and tables seating two to six people. 

The eye drawn to the bar across the back of the room where customers place their orders for wine, bourbon or beer, as well as shareable snacks. A speciality offering is Horse Soldier bourbon, a line from American Freedom Distillery.

The white-tiled counter stands out among the black paneled walls with gold accents, as do the white chandeliers. Behind the servers, bottles and glasses gleam. Around the corner, a wall of wine is displayed. 

Mike and Mary note that they are glad to have some time to settle in before November’s Blaze of Lights celebration, noting that they have the best vantage point in town.

There is seating for about 50 and elbow room for under 70.

1861 Wine Lounge is open from 3:00-8:00 p.m. on Thursdays,  noon-9:00 p.m. on Fridays and 10 a.m.-9:00 p.m. on Saturdays.
