Pirate boys basketball tames Wildcats in opener

BLUFFTON – The Bluffton High School boys basketball team hammered visiting Delphos Jefferson 84-50 in their football-delayed season and Northwest Conference opener Friday night.
Blake Sommers tossed in a career-high 31 points to pace the Pirates. He canned seven deuces and splashed five trifectas, plus two foul shots.
Bluffton raced to a 26-6 lead after the first period and never looked back.
Guard Marek Donaldson drained three of his five three-pointers in the first quarter. Sommers tallied 10 early points on two treys and a pair of deuces.
Donaldson contributed 21 markers on the strength of five triples. He also hit all four free throws he attempted.
Sommers netted eight more points in the second stanza, while Donaldson nailed two more triples. The Pirates led 43-27 at intermission.
Sommers stayed hot with 10 more points in the third period as the hosts won the quarter 25-15. He knocked down three trifectas in the second half.
Bluffton doubled up DJ 16-8 in the fourth quarter to win by 34.
The Pirates begin 1-0 overall and 1-0 in league action with the blowout victory.
DJ fell to 1-3 overall and 0-1 in NWC play after the lopsided loss.
Bean Ginther added eight points for the Pirates.
Bluffton sank 17 two-point goals and buried a dozen triples. The Pirates converted 14 of 19 free throws (74 percent).
DJ connected on 13 two-pointers and drilled five treys. The Wildcats canned nine of 11 foul shots (82 percent).
Bluffton hosts winless Toledo Woodward (0-4) Saturday evening, Dec. 14.
