Erwin Othmar Schwieterman served in the U.S. Army
Erwin Othmar Schwieterman, age 91 of Maria Stein, died on Saturday March 8, 2025, surrounded by family, at Mennonite Memorial Home, Bluffton after a period of declining health. He was born on December 17, 1933, in St. Sebastian, the son of Clemens H. and Lauretta M. (Kuess) Schwieterman. On June 16, 1984, he married the love of his life, Louise Schaublin. On that day Erwin’s family grew immediately as Louise had five children, four grown and Gary, age 13. He was a wonderful dad to Gary and loved by the entire family. He adapted with great ease to the new family and all the “enthusiasm” that came along with family gatherings.
He is survived by his step children: Michelle Moyer, (Janie Carlini) Akron , Mary Ann Ring (Greg) Bluffton, Gary Schaublin (Patti) Celina: his ten grandchildren: Donald Ring, (John Howard) Columbus OH, Ethan Ring, Bluffton OH, Ian Moyer, ( Hillary) Pittsburgh PA, Seth Moyer, Pittsburgh PA, Jesse Moyer, Omaha NB, Stephanie Smith (Cameron) Dallas, TX, Maggie Burden (Vance) Celina, OH, Jackie Schaublin, Celina, Alex Osborne, Columbus, Spencer Osborne (Kenadi) Walbridge, OH . In addition, he enjoyed his six great grandchildren and one on the way. Erwin had an active and close relationship with his many loving nieces and nephews. They all share their special “Uncle Erwin” stories. This special bond endured over the years, staying in close contact over his lifetime. He had had special joy for his large and loving family, and he embraced them all, leaving a legacy of special memories.
He was preceded in death by his siblings and in-laws: Earl Schwieterman, Virginia (William) Pottkotter, Yolanda (Greg) Schmiesing. In addition, he was preceded in death by stepchildren, Rachel Osborne, (Mike) and Mark Moyer (Becky.)
Erwin attended the former Sebastion School and was a lifetime member of the St. Sebastion Catholic Church. He was a farmer his entire life and spoke warmly of the early days growing up on the farm and enjoying simple family time. All through life he was most happy when hosting large family gatherings and he and Louise were such gracious hosts! He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, stationed in Japan. In later years, he served as the Commander of the VFW Post 9019 in Chickasaw. He was a member of the Knights of St. John and the Knights of Columbus. He and Louise volunteered for many years at the annual Fish Frys and enjoyed connecting with friends and neighbors.
Erwin enjoyed all sports and kept up to date on his favorite teams. He was especially proud of the Marion Local Football team’s accomplishments. He could be found with one of his puzzle books often while watching sports. During his later years he was a resident of the Mennonite Memorial Home and was a favorite among the staff. Family would like to extend sincere gratitude to the entire team on floor one who cared for him with gentle and loving kindness.
Services will be held on Friday, March 14 at 10:30 a.m. at Hogenkamp Funeral Home, 715 E. Main St. Coldwater, OH. Friends may call from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial will follow in the Saint Sebastian Church Cemetery. Memorial contributions in memory of Erwin can be made to the donor’s charity of choice.
