Daughter of Howard Raid launches book on former Bluffton businessman, college and church leader here Oct. 1
"Howard Raid: Man of Faith and Vision," is the title of a book about a former Bluffton community leader that will be available in a Saturday, Oct. 1, book launch in Bluffton.
Elizabeth Raid, Howard's daughter, who grew up in Bluffton, wrote the biography, which tells about her father, who was a Bluffton community businessman, Bluffton College professor and Mennonite Church leader.
The book has several Bluffton connections. Robert Kreider, former president of Bluffton College, wrote the Foreword to the book. Ron Lora compiled many tributes into an essay at the conclusion of the book.
According to Elizabeth Raid, four chapters in the book are about Bluffton College, church and other involvements of her father as he related to this community. Chapter 12 focuses almost entirely on the Bluffton and Pandora communities.
Person who knew Dr. Raid recognized him as a teacher with a pastoral touch. He brought to the classroom, not only academic credentials, but the authenticity of a business-tested entrepreneur. The book is not only the biography of a man of distinction, but it is also a series of reflections on a transitional period in American and Mennonite history.
Elizabeth Raid will be in Bluffton during Bluffton University's homecoming weekend in a book launch. The event is at 11 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 1, at Marbeck Center on the university campus. A similar event will take place Oct. 8 on the campus of Bethel College, North Newton, Kan.
Pandora Press, Kitchener, Ontario, is the book publisher. Over the years, Pandora Press has made available a number of historical and theological books from Anabaptist, Mennonite and Believers Church perspectives. The Raid book is number 13 in a series of the book publisher's Mennonite Reflection series.
