1950 Main Street - businesses change but buildings look pretty familiar
This is Bluffton's Main Street in 1950. While the names have changed, the storefronts look pretty familiar.
This photo is from the digital collection of the Bluffton Public Library. The woman is unidentified - until an Icon viewer and give us a name.
Among the businesses visible in the background are the Carma Theatre at 121 S. Main and the A & P Food Store, which is now Town and Country Flowers.
According to the marquee on the front of the Carma Theatre, the movie "Buccaneer's Girl," was playing at the theatre. The Internet Movie Database at www.imdb.com lists the movie's release date as March 1, 1950.
There's a pool hall in the lower area of the A&P. The business on the far right was Leiber's Jewelry. Today it is Book ReViews.
The pick up truck. Is it a 1948 Ford?
When this photo was taken Interstate 75 did not exist. Main Street was part of the Dixie Highway, aka Route 25. That meant that all traffic from Canada to Florida and return came through Bluffton.
Almost difficult to image.
