Grandey wins 300th game coaching Beaver baseball
The Bluffton University baseball team rallied from a 6-0 deficit to take down Alvernia 11-9 for Head Coach James Grandey's 300th career victory on Tuesday, March 7. The Beavers evened up their season mark at 2-2 with the historic victory.
Bluffton was trailing 6-0 when the Beavers came to bat in the bottom of the fourth inning. Although Alvernia induced a pair of groundouts to start the inning, Bluffton put together a two-out rally for the ages. Senior Adam Yoh (Milford) singled home Seth Altman (Hilliard/Hilliard Davidson) to crack the seal. Nick Diana (Batavia/West Clermont) was hit by a pitch with the bases juiced and Jake Baumgartner (Toledo/Start) made it 6-4 with his two-run single. A base hit to left center by Justin Maurer (Springfield/Kenton Ridge) plated Diana and Baumgartner and knotted the score at 6-6 after four.

The Golden Wolves led 8-6 when Bluffton came to the plate in inning six. Jack Towell (Batavia/West Clermont) and Maurer delivered back-to-back jacks, making it 9-8 after Towell's two-run bomb and Maurer's solo shot.
Alvernia tied it up 9-9 in the seventh, however, Yoh and Diana crossed the dish in the bottom of the inning, making it 11-9 in favor of the good guys. A tally by the Golden Wolves in the eighth made it a one-run game, but Jaden Jaques (New Palestine, IN) closed the door on Bluffton's 11-10 victory.
Maurer went 3-of-5 with a home run and three RBI. Baumgartner was 2-of-4 with 2 RBI and and he reached twice on Alvernia miscues. Towell finished the day 2-for-4 with two RBI and a walk. Altman, Yoh and Diana all added two safeties against the Golden Wolves.
Nathan Young (Copley) allowed the tying run in the seventh, but he earned his first victory when Bluffton plated a pair of scores in home half. Jaques worked around a leadoff double in the ninth to nail down his first save of the season.
Bluffton will play at Port Charlotte, Fla., on Wednesday, March 8. First pitch against Dean College is slated for 11 a.m.
