April 26 Arbor Day celebrations at the Bluffton Arboretum commenced with clouds and sprinkles. But with Lion and Tiger dens from Scout Troop 256 and a two very large boxes of doughnuts, it proved to a be an exceptionally fun way to pass an hour on the shores of Cobb Lake.
The Bluffton Tree Commission used the opportunity to plant a weeping redbud--specifically a Ruby Falls Redbud--near the corner of Lake St. and County Line Rd. That area of the Arboretum lost a number of trees because of upgrades to utility lines.
Tree commission member Becky Ramey noted that the Village of Bluffton has been an official Tree City for 32 years. Future plans for the Arboretum include benches and picnic tables, as well as fruit trees.
Bluffton Council member Ben Stahl provided information on how Village funds are used to support the planting and maintenance of trees.
The Scouts learned how to plant the redbud and enjoyed helping water and fill in dirt around the roots.
The Tree City map shows that Bluffton has received 5 Growth Awards during its 32 years as a Tree City.
The Arbor Day Foundation notes, "While trees do good wherever they’re planted, we focus our efforts on areas where trees can have the greatest positive impact on people’s lives. Our vast and vibrant network makes this work come to life wherever there’s a need.
We champion our partners with the resources, recognition and community to help them make a green, meaningful difference for the long-term. We’ve been doing it for more than 50 years, and we’re just getting started."
