Bluffton University names Dr. J. Alexander Sider as next President
JULY 31 MEDIA RELEASE__Bluffton University’s Board of Trustees has named the 11th president in Bluffton’s 125-year history. Dr. J. Alexander Sider has accepted the call to serve as Bluffton’s next president effective Aug. 1, 2025.
“On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I am delighted to announce the Board's unanimous decision to appoint Dr. Alex Sider as President of Bluffton University,” said Cheryl Hacker ’81, Bluffton University Board of Trustees Chair. “Shortly after his appointment as Interim President this past February, it was quite clear that Dr. Sider has the vision, leadership skills and commitment to Bluffton's mission and values, to lead the Bluffton to a more secure future so that Bluffton can continue to provide a nurturing environment for student success. His collaborative approach is a testament to his understanding that ‘relationships matter.’”
Dr. Sider stepped into the active role of Interim President in February 2025 during a transitioning time at Bluffton. However, he is no stranger to the campus and its vibrant community. Dr. Sider, a longtime member of the Bluffton faculty, has served the university in various roles since joining in 2006, including as Professor of Religion, The Harry and Jean Yoder Scholar in Bible and Theology, Director of Peace and Conflict Studies, Director of University Assessment Programs, ADA Coordinator, and most recently Vice President of Academic Affairs and Academic Dean.
Dr. Sider is also the author or co-author of two books and numerous articles in Christian theology, ethics, Anabaptist studies and disability studies. His leadership, deep knowledge of the institution, and dedication to Bluffton’s mission make him well-qualified to guide the university as it continues to “prepare students of all backgrounds for life, vocation and service to all people.”
“Bluffton has been my home for nearly two decades. It’s where I’ve taught, learned, grown, and witnessed the transformative power of a Bluffton education,” said Dr. Sider. “To be named the 11th president of this remarkable institution is both an incredible honor and a humbling responsibility. I am grateful for the trust Bluffton’s Board of Trustees have in me to lead Bluffton into the future.”
During his time as Interim President, Dr. Sider focused on building a strong foundation of trust, communications and collaboration across campus. His leadership emphasized creating stability and support for Bluffton’s faculty, staff, students, alumni and friends. Now, as he steps fully into the role of President, Dr. Sider remains committed to that same spirit of steadiness and connection. He aims to foster a thriving campus environment by working closely with the campus community—guided at every step by Bluffton’s enduring core values of discovery, community, respect and service.
“Bluffton’s mission has shaped generations of students,” said Dr. Sider. “I truly believe it’s more relevant and needed now than ever. As we look to Bluffton’s future, I carry with me both a steady reverence for our traditions and a clear-eyed vision for our next chapter. A journey that invites innovation, expands opportunity, and strengthens our shared values.”
Raised in the Brethren in Christ Church, Dr. Sider has always been drawn to the important of faith in both the lives of individuals and higher education. With more than 20 years of experience in higher education, he has seen the transition of the college landscape and understands the importance of change alongside reverence for tradition. With Bluffton’s campus being host to historic traditions, rich heritage and vibrant community, Dr. Sider looks to continue to build on the strong foundation set for Bluffton’s next 125 years and beyond.
“Bluffton’s commitment to academic excellence, community, and preparing students to thrive in an ever-changing world remains strong, and I am excited to work alongside our dedicated faculty, staff, and students as we continue to build upon this solid foundation,” said Dr. Sider.
Bluffton’s presidential search process was led by Annette (Althaus ’89) Heslep, member of the Bluffton University Board of Trustees and Chair of the Presidential Interview Committee.
“I want to thank Trustee Annette Heslep for her leadership, along with the other officers who served on the Presidential Interview Committee, for conducting a meaningful and thorough interview process,” said Hacker.
The vote for Dr. Sider’s presidential position was unanimous by the committee.
“Dr. Sider has shown great resilience during this time of transition,” said Heslep. “His commitment to leading with strong Christian values, his vision for the future of Bluffton University, and his focus on student successes are all attributes that we believe will lead us to a stronger and brighter tomorrow. As a board, we have nothing but respect and admiration for what Dr. Sider has accomplished as our Interim President, and we are excited for a future that includes his leadership. He has the full support of the Board of Trustees, as demonstrated by the unanimous confirmation of his appointment.”
Dr. Sider follows Dr. Jane Wood who will stepped down in February after completing seven years as president at Bluffton University.
A native of Grantham, Pa., Dr. Sider earned his Ph.D. in Religion from Duke University (2004), an MTS from The Divinity School at Duke University (1998), and a B.A. in Religion (Philosophy concentration) from Messiah University (1995). He also spent time at Oxford University in England as a visiting fellow in theology at Blackfiars Hall.
Dr. Sider is married to Kathy Dickson, 2003 Bluffton alumni, and has two sons, J.D. and Evan. They reside in Bluffton, Ohio, and attend First Mennonite Church in Bluffton.
President Sider will be officially inaugurated on Thursday, Oct. 2, to kick off Bluffton’s Homecoming Weekend. Seating is limited and RSVP is required. You can learn more at www.bluffton.edu/inauguration/
