Pirate girls basketball out-guns Red Devils, wins tourney title

BLUFFTON__The Bluffton High School girls basketball team rode explosive first and third quarters to soundly defeat visiting Arlington 66-48 in the championship game of the annual McDonald’s Holiday tournament on Saturday, November 22.
Pirate junior Greta Myers poured in 11 first-period points en route to a career-high 26 markers to earn tournament MVP honors.
Host Bluffton racked up 24 points in the first period to lead by 13 early. The Red Devils hung within 40-25 at halftime. But a 22-point Pirate third stanza put the game well out of reach at 62-40.
Myers netted 19 points in the first half, then added two triples in the third period. Sophomore Maelee Miller tallied all 11 of her points in the third stanza to help put the Red Devils away.
The Pirates improved to 2-0 with the title-clinching victory. Arlington fell to 1-1 after the loss.
Junior Gracie Warren netted five of her nine markers in the third period, while senior Blair Utendorf tallied six of her seven points in the first half. Both Pirates were named to the all-tournament team.
Myers scored 34 points in the two tourney games for Bluffton. She splashed five triples in the championship game and hit four deuces to go with three foul shots.
Sophomore Taylin Goldman and Macy Schaadt each netted four points.
Madison Ernst tallied seven of her team-high 13 points in the third period for Arlington.
Teammate Amelia Alexander netted a dozen points for the second straight game in the tourney. She knocked down three treys. Raeleigh Bower added eight points.
Devils Ernst and Alexander made the all-tournament team.
Bluffton drilled 19 two-point goals and canned seven trifectas. The Pirate girls drained seven of 11 free throws (64 percent).
The Devil girls sank seven two-pointers and drilled nine triples. Arlington canned seven of nine free throws (78 percent).
It was the first time since 2022 that the Pirate girls won the title at their own holiday tourney.
The Pirates are back in action on November 25 at Ben Logan in their first road game of the season.
