Obituary for Barbara J. Shapter

Barbara Shapter, 1921-2026

Barbara J. Shapter, age 104, passed away April 1, 2026, at StoryPoint Memory Care in Waterville, Ohio, leaving behind a legacy of love, resilience, and family devotion that spanned more than a century.

Born June 26, 1921, in Columbus, Ohio, Barbara graduated from Columbus Central High School and went on to build a life rich in experience and connection. Over the years, she made homes in Michigan, Ohio, Maryland, West Virginia, and Kentucky, embracing each chapter with quiet strength and grace.

On June 29, 1940, she married the love of her life, Alan R. Shapter. Together, they built a life centered on family, commitment, and enduring partnership until his passing on November 28, 2001. Their bond was a cornerstone of Barbara's life and a lasting example to those who knew them.

Barbara was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Alan; her son and daughter-in-law, James and Carol Shapter; and her daughter, Diana Shapter Taylor.

She leaves behind a family who will forever cherish her memory: her daughter-in-law, Betty Cognion Shapter; her grandchildren, John (LeAnn) Shapter, Stephanie (Mike) Moenter, and Barbara (Mike) Barron; her bonus granddaughter, Susan Cognion; and her great-grandchildren, Justin (Whitney), Elias, Ryan P., and Ryan J.

Barbara's hands were rarely still. An avid quilter, she belonged to numerous quilting groups and guilds, finding both friendship and purpose in her craft. The time she spent quilting alongside her daughter-in-law Carol was especially dear to her–stitching not only with skill, but with love, laughter, and shared moments that will never be forgotten. Her quilted arts will remain cherished family heirlooms.

She found joy in life's simple pleasures: time outdoors, a good book, and the quiet challenge of a puzzle. But more than anything, Barbara treasured her family. In her later years, she delighted in the energy and spirit of her youngest grandson, Ryan J.–watching him zoom by on his hoverboard, listening as he tried to explain TikTok videos, and smiling at his determined efforts to win a card game. Their 92-year age difference brought a special kind of joy–one filled with gentle smiles and a beautiful bridge between generations.

Barbara's faith in God was a guiding light throughout her life. It shaped her values and was reflected in the kindness, patience, and love she showed to those around her.
