Softball: Pirates pick up another NWC win at Delphos
By Angie Palte
The Lady Pirates picked up another conference win on Monday, as they traveled to Delphos to take on the Wildcats. The Pirates are now 4-2 in the NWC and 9-6 on the season.
Lead off batter Katie Palte got things started for the Pirates with a nice bunt and quickly rounded the bases to third on a Wildcat overthrow to first. Lauren Parkins was able to pick up the RBI as she was thrown out at first, putting the Pirates up 1-0.
Anna Crisp tacked on her own base hit and score in the second inning, as she also gained third base on an overthrow and then safely crossed home plate on a passed ball by Delphos pitching.
The third inning plated one more run for the Pirates as Ashlin Gable blasted a double to right field, and was in turn batted in by a Mac Wilson base hit.
With two outs in the fourth inning, Crisp gained first base with a bloop to center field and was joined by Kayla Longworth with a walk. Palte smashed a hit to the right field fence and turned on the speed as she rounded the bases with a 3 run in the park homer. Putting the Pirates up 6-0.
The fifth inning started out rough for the Wildcat pitcher as she walked the first four Pirate batters. Gable was able to score on a wild pitch and Lexi Lugibihl added a base hit. Crisp chalked up her third hit of the night with an RBI bloop to left field and with bases still loaded Longworth helped her cause with a 2 run base hit to put the Pirates up 10-0.
The Wildcats in fear of an early run rule game were able to force two runs across the plate before the Pirate defense shut them down.
The Lady Pirates fired right back in the sixth tallying three runs. Tori Halcomb earned base on a fielder's choice and Wilson added a base hit.
Adrian Rumer punched in two RBI's with a base hit and Lugibihl added the last run, making the score 13-2. The Pirate defense ended the game early for the Wildcats as they turned a double play. Palte fielded the hit and picked off the batter at first and Gable then fired to Rumer at third to get the advancing base runner.
The Pirates host LCC in an NWC match up on Thursday at Harmon Field.
