15 years later, The Black Lab Trading Co., an anchor on Main Street

What started as a family adventure in 1998 turned into 15 years of an established business in downtown Bluffton. That family adventure is The Black Lab Trading Co.

Ben Sprunger bought the historic building located 121 N. Main St., that has housed many businesses over the 100-plus years. Some of these businesses include an opera house, general mercantile store, Basinger's Furniture, Jan’s and others.

His daughter, Julie Stratton, owner-manager of the store, decided to open a store that not only housed a business, but was home for others who wanted to sell hand-crafted items, furniture, florals and antiques.

There have been many changes over the last few years. In 2001 The Black Lab became a drop off for dry cleaning. In 2005 a café was added to the building on Vine Street, which now houses Jeanne’s Kitchen. Last year the store began renting linens for weddings and other special occasions.

“We started out with the majority of our sales being children’s clothing and toys, but over the years we have expanded to home décor, gifts, jewelry and purses as well as dry cleaning services and linen rental," she said.

Adding, "It has also been wonderful to have the added dimension of our vendors and their products.”

The store has served over 60 home-based businesses and vendors over the past 15 years.  Artisans who want an outlet for their products, but aren’t big enough for their own storefront can rent space and sell their crafts, books, antiques and furniture here.

Today there are over 20 small businesses that make their home at The Black Lab.

“There have certainly been some hard times as a small business in the last 15 years, but we are so grateful for our customers and the town for their support,” said Stratton.

“Factors such as the economy, finding the right mix a merchandise for Bluffton and keeping relevant to shoppers over the years have been some of the challenges," she said.

Retail runs in the family. Stratton’s great-grandfather started Sprunger Shoes in Berne, Ind., which is now run by her uncle Kenyon Sprunger. It received an award for the Indiana State House for being open for over 100 years.

“I know I won’t see that happen here in my lifetime, but I am hoping to be around 15 years from now serving residents of Bluffton and surrounding towns,” said Sprunger.

The Black Lab Trading Co. gets its name from the family’s love of Labrador retrievers.

“My dad and mom, brother, Jon, and I have all had black or yellow labs. They are great dogs with great personalities. They have brought a lot of joy to our families and we are hoping when you shop at our store you feel like family and have an enjoyable experience.” said Stratton.

To celebrate its 15th anniversary now until the end of the month, customers will find anniversary specials throughout the store. During the Fall Festival on Saturday, Sept. 28, will be drawings for giveaways and refreshments.
