Second grader loves math, science, and reading...15 minutes with Kate Pannabecker

The Icon staff recently spent a sunny, cold Sunday afternoon with Kate Pannabecker, 8-year-old daughter of Tim and Jo Pannabecker.

What grade are you in and who is your teacher?

Second grade, Mrs. Fry

What are your favorite subjects in school?

Science, math, and reading.

Least favorite?

Writing. It's hard.

Tell us about your spelling tests.

We have to know 15 words. Mia (her younger sister) has to know 10. We have to write three sentences. We have a bonus word, like "atmosphere."

What are some of the books you've read recently?

All about Abe Lincoln; The Haunted Hotel

Do you have a favorite food?

Chinese dumplings, those little round dough things that you fill and fold in half. I can use chopsticks if there is something to hold them together. My grandfather was born in China, when the war was going on.

Have you ever stayed up all night?
 
I stayed up all night the night before kindergarten because I was so excited. We also stayed up on New Year's Eve, playing Wii and watching the movie, Percy Jackson.
 
Do you play any musical instruments and/or play any sports?
 
(Answers by playing the piano). I play soccer and swim team -- the Sardines. I do the back stroke, butterfly, and breast stroke.

Have you ever broken a bone?

I fell out of a tree when I was two and broke my arm. I had to get it X-rayed. It looked weird.

 
Have you traveled anywhere out of the United States?
 
New Zealand, to see my mom's parents and our cousins. We rode a zipline.
 
If you could be any animal, what would you be?
 
Koala, panda, cheetah, dolphin, seahorse, tiger.
 
Wow! You're imaginative. If you were going to write a new book series, who would be the characters and what would the book be about?
 
Zombie Builders. Bob, Fred Johnson, Mary, and Larry.
 
If you were going to invent a new color, what would you name it?

Tred. (Turquoise and red.)

 
What is the hardest thing you've ever done?

A round off with one hand.

 
What is the highest number you can count to?
 
320. That's just where I stopped.
 
What is your favorite movie?

Oh, that's hard. Despicable Me II, because it's funny and I like the minions. Harry Potter, Percy Jackson I and II.
