Volleyball sweeps at RHIT in HCAC opener

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The Bluffton University Beavers were in Terre Haute, Ind., on Saturday, Sept. 26, to take on the Fightin’ Engineers of Rose –Hulman, kicking off Heartland Conference play. Bluffton won its sixth straight in improving to 9-6 on the season, while RHIT dipped to 8-9 and 0-1 in the HCAC.

The visitors came out on fire in set one and ended up winning by a comfortable 25-16 margin. As set two started it was more of a back-and-forth affair, and the Beavers were down 22-20 before Coach Yarnell called a timeout. After the break, senior Jenny Brown (St. Marys/Memorial) earned the next five points as and the Beavers claimed set two, 25-22! In the capper Bluffton put its sizable foot down, dominating to the tune of a 25-14 victory while hitting .324 for the set.

The Beavers were paced offensively by senior Jenny Brown with 14 kills and an outstanding .440 hitting percentage on the match. Brown couldn’t do it all on her own as Lauren Weisgarber (Bolivar/Tuscarwas Valley) added eight kills and no errors while hitting .471 against the Engineers. MacKenzie McFarlin (Ashland) and Kendra Parmenter (Grove City) finished with seven and five kills apiece.

Erin Weisgarber (Bolivar/Tuscarawas Valley) dished out 29 assists and libero Sydney Mohler (Lima/Central Catholic) added 13 digs to the stat sheet. Brown also chipped in five blocks, while freshman Jessie Gibson (Warsaw/River View) added two solo stuffs. From the service line sophomore Becca Tourney (Columbia City, Ind., fired it well all afternoon, finishing with two aces in the victory.

The Beavers will return to action Wednesday, taking on Earlham at 7 p.m. back in the Sommer Center.
