Volleyball survives at MSJ in 5 sets

CINCINNATI, Ohio - The Bluffton University volleyball team went to Cincinnati on Wednesday night and survived a thrilling five-set slugfest with Mount St. Joseph on October 4, 2017. The Beavers improved to 10-9 overall and 1-1 in the Heartland Conference thanks to the victory (21-25, 25-23, 25-21, 20-25, 15-13). MSJ fell to 11-8 and 1-1 in the HCAC.

Junior Bethany Martini (Pickerington/North) slammed home a career-best 24 kills in the back-and-forth affair. She also came up with a career-high 17 digs to help the cause. Freshman Remi Bower (Hamler/Patrick Henry) chipped in with eight kills, while junior Jessie Gibson (Warsaw/River View) and Sarah Heydinger (Tiro/Buckeye Central) added seven spikes apiece.

Erin Weisgarber (Bolivar/Tuscarawas Valley) handed out 45 assists and racked up 17 digs as well. Sydney Mohler (Lima/Central Catholic) was everywhere, piling up a match-high 30 digs for the victors. Junior Abby Rohrbach (New Knoxville) finished with 16 digs, while sophomore Carly Lester (Chesapeake) paced the front row with five total blocks.

Bluffton is back on the road this weekend when the Beavers travel to Terre Haute, Ind., for a crucial matchup with the Heather Schierer-led Rose-Hulman Fightin' Engineers. First serve is slated for 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 7.
