The Overcoat by Nikolai Gogol, dramatized for radio by Jim Poyser.
The play is set in 19th century Russia. Akaky is a clerk in a government office copying documents day in and day out. Walking to work, he wears a ragged overcoat and those around him urge him to get a better coat.
By saving, working overtime and pawning some of his possessions, Akaky is finally able to buy a very fine looking overcoat. While far from home and on foot, Akaky is robbed of his coat. He manages to stumble to the home of his supervisor and asks for help but is turned away. He then walks through the freezing temperatures to his home and dies from the cold. Akaky returns as a ghost and visits his superior. Despite the sad ending, there is humor in the play.
The Overcoat was produced in collaboration with Malcolm Raeburn Read (Director) from the University of Salford, the Department of Communication and Media Studies and the Department of Theatre Arts.
