Part 1 - a chat with local composters

This is Part One of a two-part series on composting

Now that the leaves are starting to fall, you can do something other than rake them up, and throw them away: compost them.

Composting is a natural process the breaks down organic materials, such as vegetable scraps or leaves, into nutrient-rich soil.

Don't be stranded in the cold

Barbara J. Wood, 91, passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2018, at 8:55 a.m. at the Freida House at Willow Ridge, Bluffton.

She was born on Feb. 2, 1927, in Kenton, Ohio, to Chester E. and Helen (Griffis) Brown who preceded her in death.  On July 1, 1950, she married Charles E. Wood and he survives in Bluffton.

Barbara was a former office secretary at Kenton High School and a homemaker.  She was a member of the Ada First United Methodist Church.  She was a former member of the Christ United Methodist Church in Wauseon and Lake Panasoffkee United Methodist Church in Florida. 

Ann E. Badertscher, 77, died Oct. 31, 2018, at the Mennonite Memorial Home in Bluffton.  Ann was born Jan. 26, 1941 in Bluffton to the late Denver and Olive (Schumacher) Zimmerly. On April 8, 1961, she married Robert Badertscher who survives.

Ann had previously worked for Marathon Oil Company in Findlay, Bluffton College and the Comfort Inn in Bluffton.  She was a member of the St John's United Church of Christ, Bluffton.  Ann enjoyed crocheting and was a Bluffton High School graduate.

Paul S. Schutz, 96, died Oct. 31, 2018, at Hilty Memorial Home in Pandora. Paul was born Aug. 9, 1922, in Pandora to the late Hiram and Lucille (Weida) Schutz.  On March 27, 1948, he married Dorothy Knepper Schutz who preceded him in death on Feb. 16, 2010.

Paul graduated from Pandora High School and was a U.S. Army veteran serving in World War II. He was a farmer and had worked at McIntosh Industries in Bluffton. Paul was a member of Pandora United Methodist Church and the Pandora American Legion.
