The Bluffton-Beaverdam-Richland Township United Way will hold a "work night" at 6:30 p.m.,  Aug. 13, in the Bluffton Middle School Cafetorium.

"The more who attend, the quicker we can get our sorting, stuffing, and labeling completed and everyone can be on their way to enjoy the rest of the evening," said Linda Fleming of the board.

 

From root beer floats on the porch to Suzuki violin recital, August is full of activities at Maple Crest Senior Living Village.

ArtSpace/Lima announces the opening of ArtSpace/Pops 2013: A Fine Craft Invitational in The Ellen Nelson Gallery, Friday, Aug. 2.

ArtSpace/Pops features all new works by 22 area craftsmen and women in a joint showing, which builds on the success of its predecessors in 2011 and 2012. Several of the artists are from Bluffton or have local connections. 

In 1894, Lemuel Benedict, a Wall Street broker, who was suffering from a hangover, ordered "some buttered toast, crisp bacon, two poached eggs, and a hooker (pitcher) of hollandaise sauce" at the Waldorf Hotel in New York. 

After substituting Canadian bacon for regular bacon and English muffins for toast, Eggs Benedict became a favorite on the Waldorf's breakfast and lunch menu. 

The Eggs Benedict at Mustard Seed Café, N. Main St., Bluffton, features homemade English muffins and hollandaise sauce and is available weekends after 10 a.m.

Phoebe Ann Clapper, 94, died at 11:25 p.m. at Mennonite Memorial Home, Bluffton.  She was born July 3, 1919, in Hancock County, Ohio to the late John and Mary (Barkimer) Wilkins. On Feb. 23, 1941 she married Boyd L. Clapper and he died Dec. 5, 2010.

Phoebe was a homemaker and had been a 4-H Advisor.  She was an artist and china painter. Phoebe was a graduate of Bluffton High School.

Survivors include a daughter Joyce (Thomas) Martin; a grandchild Elizabeth (Joseph) Darnell; two great grandchildren Reese and Jude Darnell; and a sister Glada Basinger of Pandora.

Tyler Begg, member of the Bluffton 4-H Cattle Club, showed his heifer "Penny" to residents of the Mennonite Memorial Home last week. MMH held a farm day where many 4-H members brought their farm animals to share with residents. Begg said that he will show seven cattle at this year's Allen County Fair.
