The Bluffton English Lutheran Church will hold a community garage sale this weekend. All proceeds benefit the church youth group. Sale hours are Friday, Aug. 27 from 1 to 5 p.m., and Saturday, Aug. 28, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Coffee makers, iron, sewing machine, tools, clothes, kid's stuff, bike and many more items are in the sale. The event is at the church on Grove Street.

In addition to annexation, Bluffton council dealt with other issues on Aug. 23. Trick-or-treat night was set from 6 to 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 28. Jamie Mehaffie, village administrator, told council that he has already had inquiries on the date.

The Bluffton Tree Commission will meet at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 26. On the agenda is the 2010 Western Lake Erie Basin Emerald Ash Borer Grant, which the village has received. In addition, the commission will discuss fall 2010 tree planting projects.

The Bluffton elementary school will hold its "meet the teacher" later this week. Students with their parents may visit the elementary from 2 to 3 p.m., Friday, Aug. 27.

Bus lists will be listed in the elementary hallways during the event. This year the school will not release bus lists to the media due to privacy issues.

OPEN HOUSE: Bluffton Schools will hold open house on Monday, Sept. 13. The following times are scheduled:

  • Elementary 6-7 p.m.
  • Middle school 6:30-730 p.m.
  • High school 7-8 p.m.

Just when we think we've seen every old photo of the Bluffton-Pandora Swiss community a new "old" one comes into view. Chris Collins provided this photo to The Icon.

Viewers need to understand that the county school houses between Bluffton and Pandora sometimes had as many as three names. First, the school house had a number, next the school house often carried the name of the farm where the building was located. Finally, unique to this community, schools were named after trees planted in their lawn.

Bluffton council hopes to hold a meeting as soon as possible after Labor Day with the property owners of the North Dixie Highway area that is part of a proposed annexation into the village.

The village meeting with property owners is to answer questions and concerns of all involved. Issues involving the proposed annexation were discussed at Monday's Bluffton council meeting.

Jamie Mehaffie, village administrator, said that the Allen County Map Office has received the annexation survey from Bacon and Associates. The office personnel are reviewing the survey.

Several projects are underway this week in the Bluffton Hospital construction project.

Workers are beginning to erect the structural framing of the two-story addition, which includes the new emergency department and other services.

Workers are also finishing the roof for the new operating room area located on the corner of Garau Street and Harmon Road, as well as laying format for new walls and hanging HVAC duct work in this area.
