Bluffton school board meets on Tuesday, Aug. 16, just as the 2011-12 school year is nearly launched.

The agenda includes transportation routing plans, several supplemental contract decisions, substitute teacher decision and the approval of one student who will be issued a diploma due to satisfactory completion of all graduation requirements.

We at Stratton Greenhouses would like to thank everyone who participated in the 2011 Bluffton Beautification Project. Because of your generous contributions, we were able to add five additional pots to extend the flowers throughout the entire streetscape project.

This year has been an extreme challenge with the heat. We have been watering every other day since May and fertilizing once or twice a week. We have used 6,300 gallons of water.

The Lilly Oncology International Art Competition and Exhibition will make a six-day stop at the Blanchard Valley Regional Cancer Center (BVRCC), Findlay, from Aug. 18 through Aug. 25.

The show will be open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Aug. 18, 19, 22, 23 and 24, and 8 a.m. to noon on Aug. 25. It is free and open to the public.

The Lilly Oncology International Art Competition and Exhibition features artwork created by cancer patients and their caregivers. Artwork includes acrylic, oil, pastel, photography and water color mediums.

Captain America - The First Avenger (PG 13), will play at the Shannon Theatre Aug. 19 - Aug. 25, according to Pete Suter.

2D show times are every evening at 7 p.m., with Saturday and Sunday matinees at 1:30 p.m.

3D show times are every evening at 9:30 p.m. with Saturday and Sunday matinees at 4 p.m. All 3D seats are only $6.

Who'd have thought it?

A musical performathon that raised $4,346.70 during one morning and one afternoon in Bluffton.

That's exactly the result of the performathon put on the by students of Krysti's Music Studio for Bluffton's Youth for Christ program.

Krysti wishes to thank everyone who donated to YFC. She told The Icon:"We appreciate your generosity and for helping to teach the kids the importance of giving back. Prize winners will be contacted directly. Thanks again!"

Bluffton High School's marching band will present a run through of the pre-game and its first band show at noon, Friday, Aug. 19, at the village park, according to David Sycks, director.

The show is open to the public.

Later that evening the band will perform at the Allen County band show.

In honor of National Inventor's Month and the birth of Neil Armstrong, Bluffton Public Library will host a family Space Day at 2 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 18.

Special guest Dr. Eric Baumgartner, Dean of the T.J. Smull College of Engineering at Ohio Northern University, will begin the program by sharing his experiences working for the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL).

The American Legion Post 382 Bluffton, Ohio would like to thank all of our sponsors for their generous donation's for our 2nd annual golf tournament.

Lucille Bucher of Bluffton will celebrate her 90th birthday on Saturday, Aug. 20, with an open house at Maple Crest from 3-5 p.m..

She was born on Aug. 20, 1921 to Albert and Sarah Burry. She married Victor Bucher on Feb. 19, 1942. He died on June 11, 2006.

Mrs. Bucher has six children. They are Rich (Carol) Bucher of North Danvers, Ill., Norma Sommer of Bluffton; Nolan (Linda) Bucher of Elkhart Ind.; Nancy (Nick) Carney of Pataskala, Ohio; Corinne (Dave) Lee of Bluffton; and Gloria (Jan) Wiechart of Wapakoneta.
